About Mestre Popó
He was considered ‘Father of the Maculelê in Brazil’. He revived this art in the middle of the twentieth century (around 1940) on a point when it was almost extinct. He started teaching the movements and the music he had learned as a child, adding words from the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé and Euro-Brazilian Christianity when he could not remember the original ones.
