About Mestre Gato Preto

Mestre Gato Preto was born in town of Santo Amaro da Purificaçao, in the district of Sao Braz, Reconcavo Bahiano. He was the student of Mestre Cobrinha Verde, and Mestre of the bateria, in Pastinha’s Academy. Mestre Gato Preto represented Brazil and capoeira at the World Festival of Black Art, Dakar, Senegal in 1966 on behalf of Mestre Pastinha. He was presented with the ‘Golden Berimbau’ following a competition in which Mestre Canjiquinha was also entered. He left behind him students and capoeira groups, in Brazil, who continued to follow his philosophy of capoeira. Among these groups were those of Mestre Zé Bahiano in Caraguatatuba-SP, Mestre Marrom’s group in Rio de Janeiro and that of Mestre Prego in Sao José dos Compos-SP and of Pinguim in the capital of Sao Paulo. In 2001 he made a beautiful cd with mestre Marrom called The Art of the Berimbau”.””estre Gato Preto was born”
